The Abortion Debate

Abortion is a topic often debated in High Schools. What follows here is an abortion Debate that features pro-abortion and anti-abortion camps in the Senior Year of a Local Public High School:

Opening Statement:

Pro-Abortionist: "Everyone knows that in 1973 the United States Supreme court ruled that abortion is legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Back Alley abortions were finally a thing of the past. Safe and legal abortions are now a woman's right. While no one wants to get an abortion, sometimes abortion becomes necessary. Rape and incest are the most obvious needs for abortion, but teenage pregnancy and unplanned pregnancies make abortion a women's right."

Prolifer: "Abortion destroys the life of a preborn child and is against the Commandment of God "Thou Shalt Not Kill." When a baby is aborted all its future is destroyed. When a woman gets pregnant she can avoid abortion and choose life for her preborn by giving her baby up for adoption or by raising the baby herself. There are many people who want to adopt and prolife groups who will help you to have your baby. There is also help on the internet through websites like www.lifecall.org.

Discussion:

Pro-abortionist: All you right-to-lifers have a "holier than thou" attitude. All you do in blame and point fingers, when the US Supreme Court is in support of abortion. You really don't care about the concerns of women. All you do is condemn and criticize. Some of you are even hypocrites... you bomb clinics and kill innocent people. You are to be feared and to be jailed for all you do to stop abortion.

Prolifer: True prolifers do not destroy life. True prolifers are totally against clinic bombings. Two wrongs do not make a right! As for the "Holy" part of your agrument, God calls all of us to be holy people. And the Bible says, "Choose Life." Finally, there are shelters, support groups, hotlines and all manner of services to help pregnant women who want to choose life for the preborn children. Call 1-800-NO-ABORT to see what free services are available. Pro-abortionist: And you call women "killers" and all manner of names which start the whole conflict and cause untold problems. Prolifer: Isn't it better that one is called a "murderer" now in the hopes that there might be time for her to change the direction of her life, than for her to stand in judgement before God later and find out that what she did by murdering her proborn child is "killing" in God's Eyes?

Pro-Abortionist: What about all the unwanted children in this world? Who will take care of them? And what about "child abuse"...doesn't abortion put a stop to that?

Prolifer: We believe that abortion is the ultimate in "Child Abuse." And their are many in this world who would gladly help a pregnant woman in need and even offer to adopt her preborn child.

Pro-Abortionist: You know we get sick and tired of you prolifers and you inflamatory speach. Can't you ever stop with the play on words. Women have a right to chose and get over it. You can't change it. Quit trying.

Prolifer: What about the baby? What choice does abortion give the baby? We all were in our mother's wombs at one time and they all choose life for us. Why can't we give that same gift .... freedom to our preborn sisters and brothers? Do you really know what an abortion is all about? I challenge you to watch the video on the website www.silentscream.org and then let's debate again. An abortion kills a baby!

Pro-Abortionist: Since 1973 free choice says its NOT A BABY! Its a woman's CHOICE! Its a woman's CHOICE!

Prolifer: Once before in this country the U.S. Supreme Court made a terrible law. It was called the Dread Scott Decision. We went to Civil War over that U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said Negroes were not human beings, but they were equal to property. The Supreme Court was wrong then and it is wrong now.

Pro-Abortionist: What kind of a life is it for a teenage girl in this school to have to worry about graduating High School and worry about raising a baby? Wouldn't it be easier for her to just have an abortion and finish her education and later she can have her child?

Prolifer: Why don't you ask the teens in this school who had their babies if they are sorry they did? I don't know of one who would say to you that she wishes she had an abortion, but I do know plenty of teens who had abortions who are sorry they did.

Pro-Abortionist: No one is saying girls get pregnant and want to have abortions. At least they have the legal right to do so in this country at this time and hopefully they will always have the peace of mind to know they can get abortions without going to a back alley abortionist!

Prolifer: "Peace of Mind!?" Have you ever heard of "Post Abortion Syndrome"? Women get depressed, have life-long regrets, need counseling, have marital problems and even get suicidal after abortions. Many mental health professionals believe that the high rate of teen suicide is directly related to the high rate of teen abortion.

Pro-Abortionist: What about over population? Aren't there too many people having babies already? Can you imagine what would happen if we didn't have abortion?

Prolifer: You have your numbers wrong. In many countries today there are not enough babies born to replace the number of people dying. That is one of the reasons why here in the U.S. we are so worried about the Social Security System. We have murdered in the womb the future generation that was suppose to be here to work and support our current generation.

Pro-Abortionist: Prolifers are old fashioned Bible Toting, religious fanatics who push their outdated views on others. Prolifers are in the minority and they don't like it.

Prolifer: Prolifers are trying to do what God wants they to do. Remember in World War II when Germany was killing Jews in the gas chambers. How many good Germans tried to hide their Jewish Nieghbors and help them to escape? That is what prolifers are trying to do in this world and someday God Himself will be the Final Judge as to who was doing the right thing in His Eyes!

Conclusion:

Pro-Abortionist: Abortion is a freedom guaranteed by the U.S. Surpreme Court for over 25 years now and prolifers are slow to learn that they cannot change history. In the modern world women have earned the right to privacy and the right to decide what to do with their own bodies. No one else has the right to tell women how to live their lives, least of all prolifers who have a hard time understanding change and an even harder time following the laws of this great land.

Prolifer: There are man's laws and there are God's laws. Abortion is a law of man that takes away the Right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution in its Bill of Rights to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We can't have it both ways. On our currency are the words, "In God We Trust." and in our Pledge of Alliegance, we say, "One Nation Under God." How can we deny the right to life for the most vulnerable of all in our Nation, the child in the womb?
